Shade Sails - How To Get That Streamlined Look
Here are some of our most popular tips on DIY shade:
Shade Sail Size
DIY stores are a popular source of ready made shade sails. The only problem is getting home to find the sail size does not match up with your available fixing points! Work out your available fixing points and take point to point measurements from these. Allow some space for tensioning devices like turnbuckles and curvature for when your sail is under tension. Both of these actions reduce the actual shade area.
When planning the shape of your sail, avoid designs that are narrow or thin. A long narrow sail under tension will not give you much cover!
Slope
Shedding of water and good stability are a result of sloping the sail and slightly twisting it. Slope is acheived by making one set of fixing points higher than the other. Twisting or giving the sail a 'hypar' design makes it more stable under wind pressure.
Security of fixings
Sails under wind tension need adequate load bearing fixing points. If using a wall to support the sail the all needs to be structurally strong enough to bear the load. Secure fixing points like eye straps can be found in our accessories. Reinforcing walls is another option. If you are unsure on loads, consult a local engineer.
Posts need to have deep enough fixings and we have a diagram on our site for guidance. Only measure from the fixing points wehn the post is fully set.
Tensioning devices like turnbuckles are used to tension the sail. Do one corner at a time to spread the tension evenly across the sail. Cables can be used to cover any small gaps in distance.
Suitable quality shade mesh
Finally, material quality is another factor. If you want the sail to last and not hang limp and absorb water, seams and weave need to be of a good quality. Poorly stitched or too many seams can come undone. Poor quality shade cloth can absorb water, quickly deteriorate or not be fully UV rated.
Mulders manufacture premium quality sails, custom made to order. Many of our customers are interstate and overseas. More details on our tips above plus a host of design ideas and colour swatches can be found on our webiste http://www.mulders.com.au

Help on a DIY Halloween "costume"?
I made my kitten Trixie some angel wings out of some thin cardboard and store bought feathers. These turned out REALLY good!
but now i can't seem to get the wings to stick to the strap that goes around her ribs.
i'm using the clear straps that come with most bras these days (it was the only thing i could think of). i tried putting paper around the strap then hotgluing the cardboard part of the wing to the paper but the paper just ripped off...
ANY ideas??
I doubt those straps would be enough to support the wings. Try making the straps out of more cardboard. Like, one strap under her ribs and another strap around her neck or something. Kind of like on of those high tech leashes. That way the wings won't fall off since you'd be gluing cardboard to cardboard
