Is it strange to have a band style ring as an engagement ring?

Also, I don't want anything expensive that I might lose. I would have a wedding band to go with it, but the wedding band would be plain, no stones or anything.
My hairdresser didn't want a solitaire that stuck out either, because she said she'd never be able to wear it, since she uses her hands so much.
